Magazine reflection take Tres

What did you learn?
During this project I learned so many new things that have to do with writing. I learned how to make writing stronger yet simple. Another thing I learned was that the less -ing words possible the better your writing will be. Simplicity is the key to great writing! I also learned a lot about the real “world”. Its just easy to say, “I want to do this when I grow up”, but going to internship made me realize that the real world will be hard.

How did you learn it?
Well, the writing techniques I learned it by practicing with my essay for the magazine. I had so many drafts before my final essay, and it helped me by the critiques from my teacher and classmates. In my internship I had a lot of responsibilities that helped me grow as an “adult” relating with professional people made me more aware on how the professional world will look like.

Why is this important?
This is important because It will come in handy later on. In college will have to write lot of essays and I will have the knowledge to write the papers. Going to internship showed me how important it is to relate with professional people, and how to behave in a professional way.

Magazine Reflection Take DOS!

1. Overall, when you think about the big picture of your writing, what improved? How did it get better? Why? I improved in so many things while working in this project. My writing structure improved so much. My writing was not organized and did not make any sense. To me it seems like its perfect, because i wrote it, but when I give it to my peers to critique it I see a lot of organization comments.

2. Overall, when you think about the big picture of your writing, what still needs work? What do you think will help you improve? Why? Even thought I'm improving on my organization, I still need to work on it to make it better. This is going to help me improve by getting more critiques. Another thing I still needs wok is my grammar. Something that can make me improve is reading other articles or other peoples writing.

3. Specifically, show us something that improved and describe the path it took to get better. You can quote your article, your drafts, link to evidence, etc. The thing I worked on specifically were my run-on sentence. For example "I am really great full our school has the privilege to have an opportunity to have internships so that we can experience what the real world would be and what the future holds for students." and changed it to " I am very grateful that our school gives us an opportunity to have internships. That way we can experience what the real world will be and what the future holds for students."

4. Describe something specific (or a few things!) that you learned about writing. Something I learned was that the less -ing words possible the better your writing will be. Simplicity is the key to great writing!

Magazine Reflection

1. What went well for you during the process of creating this magazine?
I think that everything went well. I had a lot of critiques from my classmates and teacher, which made it so much better. Another thing that went great was my layout. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to use InDesign, but I did and looks great.

2. What challenges did you face as you moved from an early draft or idea to a final product? One of the challenges that I had was that at first I couldn’t think of what to put in my magazine. I first wanted to use my mentor interview, but thought it was going to be simple. I decided to use my photo essay with a very descriptive introduction.

3. What other examples of work—student and professional—stood out as exemplary and served as a good model for your own work? Something that helped me a lot was looking at magazines. It gave me good ideas for my layout, and gave me ideas for my writing as well. On if the magazines that really helped me was National Geographic and The New Yorker.

photo Essay

These past two weeks has been a fantastic experience. I learned things I never would have thought I would ever learn in my life. Throughout this photo essay you will see what I experienced and see all the incredible things that I learned; like filing, inputting data in ETO, and making copies.

After walking out of the office the last day of immersion week all I could see was GREEN! The first week of immersion I got to learn about and work with taxes. I had to make sure the client’s paperwork was in the correct order and checking that the W2s were in the folders. The BEST part was the inputting of data in a program called ETO. ETO is a program where all the people’s personal information goes in the computer after getting their taxes done. After inputting their personal information, the client had to fill out a survey, and I had to input their answers in the computer. I had to do approximately 35 folders in two weeks.

Now that immersion is over, all I do at home is answer the phone now. When my mentor wasn’t in the office, my job was to answer the phone and leave her messages. I hate to call people I don’t know on the phone and calling 45 people I didn’t know was a big challenge. At first I would get really nervous, but after a couple of calls I got the hang of it and couldn’t wait for the phone to ring again. The second week of immersion I had to make 45 calls. I had to remind people that we were going to have an orientation for free computers. By having that experience, my fear went away.

Making copies might look easy BUT it isn’t! Making copies for the first time by myself was a disaster. My mentor asked me to go make some copies of some flyers I made. She asked me to make 240 copies and I accidently pressed 540! I tried to stop the machine by pressing all these buttons and I made it so much worse. I went running to my mentor screaming for help and thankfully she stopped it. I was the most embarrassing thing ever. Who ever thought making copies was going to be so hard?

Something I used that High Tech High Media Arts has taught me was my minimal Photoshop skills. A business that I helped, other than my mentor’s, was the YMCA. I helped make flyers for their activities and a March Calendar. Showing my talents that I have in professional places is something professional adults want to see. As much as we learn from out mentors they can do the same by learning from us, as students, by teaching them things they couldn’t learn when they were I high school. I was so proud of myself when I accomplished what they assigned me to do. I never though I could make a calendar in Photoshop without asking Paul or Jake for help and that felt good.

Getting to work with Alejandra was an honor. I learned so much about her and vise versa. She is a very good person. She would do anything to help people to have a better life. She is someone I look up to. We had our fun moments and stressful moments as well. She made me realize that there are so many people that really need help out there. Every person that walked out of her office, walked out with a smile on everyday. It made me think about my future career. Do I want to make a difference in the community? Having this experience made me realize that I might want to help people and make them walk out of my office with a smile on their face as my future career. I can’t wait to learn more and see if I want this for my future.

Immersion!!!

1. What are you most excited about in regards to your immersion experience? Why do you feel this way? I'm really exited to be at my internship every day for two weeks because I really want to learn a lot more. These past weeks that I've been going to my internship I've been learning a lot and cant wait to learn more. I'm also looking forward to experience a "grown up life" for two weeks.

2. What are you most concerned about (what causes the most stress) regarding immersion? Why do you feel this way? I'm concerned about the time my mentor is making go in at 10am and leave at 7pm, but at the same time I think is good that I'm going in a regular work day schedule. Another concerned is that I'm going to stay really late and might not be able to work on my other assignments from my other classes.

Outstanding Blogz!

1. Economic advice to Barack Obama?
Mariah Morgan's economic advise to Brack Obama is that we need to come together as a family to make this crisis stop."By making our economy stronger, and more efficient in more than one way, we can pull ourselves out of this mess" Another piece of advise is Mr. Obama needs to provide more jobs for America. Mariah also mentions that she wouldn't want to be like the Great Depression back in the 1920's.

2. Literary Analysis?
I really like Sydney's blog, I believe that she is a really good writer. she shows the theme, symbols, and uses really good evidence. http://sydneyhumanities.blogspot.com/

3. Historical Writing?
In Mariah's historical writing I like that she connected her analysis to the Great Depression. She talks about how the crisis we are going through is getting close to the Great Depression. Another Historical writing that she shows is the Gilded age. She talks about how we see the rich are getting richer and the poor getting poorer. http://mariahscurrentevent1.blogspot.com/

4. Anything else that makes blogs great?
Many people have different techniques that makes their blog great. If we take our time to write and use the right evidence we would all have a great bog!

what responsibility do we have for the understanding of science?
I would say that we don't really have a responsibility for the understand of science. But I believe that we should at least have some knowledge about science and scientist.

What role should scientific inquiry and scientific knowledge play in our own society?
I think the scientific analysis and the scientific knowledge play a big role in our society because it helps comprehend and get to learn more and more about their experiences. How it works how does it affect us, scientist spend their lives trying to invent something better, or for easier use, the reason is that we hardly know how important it is to have created and invention for example light, but because we are so used to having light everywhere we go, its not important. we loose interest in who did it and really what was the background history and what was their knowledge in creating Science!

How should science influence our decisions, laws, and culture?
Science should influence laws and culture in a big way, we should know how important it is to acknowledge ideas, we should have knowledge and have the study for whatever we do in life, i believe our laws should be progressing and people should be studying and acknowledging studies in order to continue making and stating new laws.

If I was Obama's economics advisor Part 2!

Hello, Mr. President I know that we have been going through a lot of problems with the crisis, but I'm here to help you. The first thing we need to discuss is the first mistake that you made by choosing the wrong Democrats to work for you without doing any background research. For example the Treasury secretary, secretary of health, and the White House chief performance officer are organizations that currently have not payed their taxes. Like in the New York Times article states: " The reason Democrats want to raise taxes, use class warfare, attack corporations is because they take everyone else’s money and redistribute it. But they themselves don’t pay taxes, so there’s no reason for them to worry about tax increases" This was the result for not having background research on your democrats before hiring them. In other hand I believe this was a good experience to go through because we learn form our mistakes. Having that said will you make a background research to your future members? I would also encourage for the congress to approve on 1.2 trillion plan. By getting this approved we improve our economy by saving jobs and house marketing. "Mr Obama says his plan aims to create or save 3 to 4 million jobs in the US economy, which has been in a year-long recession since the collapse of the housing market sparked a global panic over bank losses that in turn froze credit markets" Knowing how you are getting prepared to face this crisis I have confidence in you that we wont go through the painful days we went through during the Great Depression in 1929 as many Americans struggled for many years. They had no jobs, no money for food and daily supplies.I hope these advise will help you with the problems we are facing with the crisis in America.

What makes a great interview?

Thoughtful Questions: The first thing you need to have when interviewing someone is questions. If you want to have a very good interview you need to create thoughtful questions, by leaving the person your interviewing thinking about the question. Also asking questions that would lead to another question.
"You were a model before you became a photographer. Do you feel you are able to express yourself more as a photographer than a model?"

Background information: When you start an interview its good to have background information about the person your interviewing because you will know other questions to ask if you come across " the awkward silence" in the interview, with Nigel Barker and David Radadi there are three paragraphs describing a little bit about Nigel's biography.

"I notice you at the shows and realized that as soon as the first model walks out until the last model ends the show, your eyes light up like a light bulb and you give your undivided attention and really focus on each model. What are you thinking?"

Good sense of humor: When your going to interview someone you need to have a good sense of humor, that way the person your interviewing can feel comfortable and open with you. David: "Is there anything that you have never revealed and would like to share with the readers?"
Nigel: " (with a smile) I have been waiting for Slash Magazine"
David: " You have great sense of humor. Thank you for your time."

John F Kennedy and George W Bush

John F Kennedy was our 35th president of the United States 1961-1963. In John F Kennedy’s inaugural speech, he spoke to many about Unity, U.S. Protection, as well in modern society, George W. Bush verbalized similarly, yet Bush’s actions are completely the opposite.

John F Kennedy once said “Now the trumpet summons us again -- not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need -- not as a call to battle, though embattled we are -- but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation," a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself” By just reading this quote from the Inaugural speech he talks about peace and how we as a nation should come together as one, that is the opposite from what George W Bush did for our country. By reading John F Kennedy’s Inaugural address it made me realize that George W Bush had done the opposite from what John F Kennedy said in his Inaugural speech.

“It is a story of a new world that became a friend and liberator of the old, a story of a slave-holding society that became a servant of freedom, the story of a power that went into the world to protect but not possess, to defend but not to conquer” By reading this quote from George W Bush we can see that he did not keep his promise of protecting the USA and possessing. All he did is make the people terrified because of war and made them suffer because of the economical crisis that we are going through because of all the money he put in toward war. He started war because he wanted to take over Iraq riches lads that had oil, but he said, “The story of a power that went into the world to protect but not possess?” I don’t get it. He did it again, lied.

“We offer a special pledge, to convert our good words into good deeds, in a new alliance for progress, to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty” John F Kennedy tried to follow what Martin Luther King’s views by agreeing on how we should all be equal no matter what color one was and where you came from. John F Kennedy felt strongly about racism due to America’s society and segregation between love and hate. “Ought to be possible, in short, for every American to enjoy the privileges of being American without regard to his race or his color” This quote shows how John F Kennedy words wanted people to come together and ignore peoples opinion towards discrimination.

We can see that these two president wanted peace, but one did not do his job correctly. The only thing he thought about was himself and not the people. Unfortunately we had to go through that. Hopefully now with our new president Barack Obama he can now do what John F Kennedy once said “We observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom -- symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning -- signifying renewal, as well as change” John F Kennedy’s speech and George W Bush speech are similar, yet Bush’s actions are completely the opposite. What we need in this world is peace, money cant only make you happy it can also destroy other peoples lives. I hope that now we can come together and make this world a better place.

John F Kennedy and George W Bush

John F Kennedy was our 35th president of the United States 1961-1963. In this essay I will compare John F Kennedy with our ex president George W Bush. I chose to compare John F Kennedy with George W Bush because John F Kennedy’s speech and George W Bush speech are similar, yet Bush’s actions are completely the opposite.

Obama's inauguration

"This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed, why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall. And why a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath"

1. Why did you choose this section?
I chose this section because its amazing how 60 years ago we had racism going on and by having a black precedent 60 years later just makes me feel that we've made a huge improvement in trying to change. This section of his speech made me realize how much we've improve and hopefully make more improvements.

2. How do Obama's words relate to the everyday life that you know and understand?
Obama's words relate to the everyday life because now we can share everything with every race that exist in the world. We go to school with more that 5 races we go to work etc.

artist statement

Thesis Statement: Don’t you think war is an absurd thing? Because I do. War to me is a waste of money, time, and a waste of peoples lives. The twin towers in New York were destroyed by terrorists as a result of war. John Lennon was an anti-war activist and in his song "Imagine", he mentions the importance of peace in the world.
INTRO:
-In this project I will introduce my opinions/ideas about war which are similar to John Lennon's and why people should share the world. Money is making us lose the respect, humanity, and the contact toward others.

BODY PARAGRAPH 1:
John Lennon opened my eyes and made me think about the importance of peace in the world.
- History of John Lennon
- history of “Imagine”
BODY PARAGRAPH 2:
War has been with us since the beginning of time. War is like cancer, people still cant find the solution or medicine to stop this illness (war).
- John Lennon opens up and talks to us about his opinions about war in a song.
-Controversy of "Imagine" (how people interpreted it)
BODY PARAGRAPH 3:
Why I chose to make a collage, quote John Lennon
- Connection between my piece of drawing and quote.
- My connection with John Lennon

Conclusion: Do you still think war is an absurd thing? The waste of money, time, and peoples lives caused by a THING called war can change the world. Money is not the only thing that can make you happy. Would you join me and help make the world live as one?

Summary- if everyone listened, looked around, and took time to make a difference, we could work together to try and end the war. John Lennon was only one of the few revolutionary antiwar activist.

GWB & the Environment

Why is Bush trying to help the environment now? In the "Bush to Protect Three Areas In Pacific" article, talks about Bush's decision, saving three areas in the Pacific Ocean, he made this decision just two weeks before he leaves the office. Why didnt he thought about it when he had more time to do it. I think that what he is doing is really good by attempting to save some areas in the pacific ocean. Although I think he is doing it do look good before leaving the office. In the 'Bush's seven deadly environmental sins' article talks about how Bush comitted seven sins during his position as the president. It also talks about how Obama is planning to fix all of Bush's mistakes that he made by "trying to make the enviroment a better place".

Internship

1. What do you hope to learn or discover about the "adult" world of work while you are at your internship?
I hope I learn how to act and talk like a professional person would. I want to discover how “adults” handle things when they are not the way they planed.

2. What do you hope to learn or discover about yourself and your identity while you are at your internship this semester?
I want to learn how to behave in a professional way and grow as an adult. I want to discover how much pressure I’m able to handle and see what I have to work on to handle the pressure if I cant.

3. What goals do you have for yourself for your internship experience? My goal that I have for myself is to come out of my internship as a new person, a mature adult.
